Make This: An Organic Family Tree

 Make This: An Organic Family Tree

It’s a whole new take on the family tree, as we sink a real tree branch into plaster of Paris and decorate it with cherished family photos.

Supplies:
Plaster Of Paris Hobby & Craft Dry Mix 4.4 lb
Cold Water
Disposable Paint Stick
Mixing Bucket
Decorative Container – No holes in the bottom
Various twigs and branches – ones with multiple leads work best
Ranger Ink Memory Glass
Ranger Ink Memory Frames
Scrap ribbon
Scrapbook paper
Family photos
Additional paper embellishments
Round nose pliers
Wire cutters
Moss or grass
Glue Stick

Let's Make it!

1. Use the mixing bucket and mix the Plaster of Paris as instructed on the package.

 

2. Fill the decorative container with the Plaster of Paris and stick in the twigs. Tape them to the bucket if you need extra stability. Allow 30 minutes for it to dry.

3. Building the Frames: Trace 2 pieces of the scrapbook paper to the size of the slide and cut them out.

 

4. Using one of the pieces as a base, layer and glue stick on additional papers with names, birthdays, quotes, etc., just like a mini scrapbook page and allow to dry.  Glue stick the remaining scrapbook paper to the other side so that you have a backing.

5. Sandwich between the two pieces of glass, then slide them into the frame.  Add a bit of ribbon to the wire loop to create a hanger. Hang the frame on the tree. Repeat for all your family members.

6. Fill the decorative container with moss to cover the plaster.

Collage Charms with Family Photos

 

Collage Charms

Photo albums aren’t the only place for family pictures. Try making heirloom charms to save your favorite shots and give them a personal touch.

What You Will Need:

1 Pendant Tray Blank
Tiny family photos
Scrapbook Paper
Old Magazines
Ultra-Fine Glitter
1 Small Rhinestone
Glue Stick
Mod Podge - Dimensional Magic
19 – 10 mm Pearls
Elastic Cording
Jump-Ring
Round Nose Pliers
Small Scissors (with small points for delicate work)

Making the Charms...

1. Shrink the photo using in either a computer program (if a digital file) or copier (if a film photo).

2. Designing the pendant: This is the fun part, think of the pendant as a little mini piece of art. Begin by cutting a piece of scrapbook paper so that it will cover the bottom/back of the pendant tray. Glue stick to the paper to the bottom of the pendant tray.

3. Next cut fun shapes from additional scrapbook papers. Shapes like hearts, flowers, leaves, etc. Just remember that the shapes need to be small enough to fit in the pendant tray. Rummage through old magazines to find cute words like love, hope, smile, kiss, etc. cut the words out in a “ransom note” style. Position the family photo and the cut outs in the pendant tray in your desired pattern and glue stick them in place.  Add a touch of sparkle by tacky gluing a small rhinestone and sprinkling a bit of ultra-fine glitter in the pendant tray. Allow to dry.

4. Adding the glassy finish: Apply Dimensional Magic in one continuous stroke covering all the papers and glitter until you have reached the sides and top of the pendant tray. Pop all air bubbles with a sewing pin. The glaze will appear foggy but, will dry crystal clear. Allow to dry on a flat surface for at least 24 hours.

 Time to string...

1. Thread the 19 pearls onto the elastic cord and tie off with a secure double knot.

2. Once dry, attach the pendant to the bracelet with pliers and a jump-ring. You could also use a jump-ring to attach the pendant to a bracelet you already own.

Craft This: Family Recipe Box

Keep those legendary family recipes organized with an easy-to-make recipe box you can customize to your heart’s content.

Supplies:
Wood recipe card box
Folkart Acrylic Craft paint
Foam brush
Rub-on letter transfers (for monogram)
4 Large Beads
E6000 glue
Drawer Pull
Hand Drill
Large tree stamp
Small acorn stamp
Stamp ink
Craft paper
Decoupage
Popsicle stick

Steps:
1. Paint box with craft paint (add two coats and dry between coats)

2. Stamp the tree design on a piece of craft paper.  Cut it out and let dry.

3. Center the handle on the top of the box and use a pencil to mark the drill holes. Drill the holes in the top of the box and attach the handle.

4. Place your stamped image on front of box to find positioning. Bend cutout along seam where the lid and bottom half of box meet. Cut along seam so that the tree cut out has a top and bottom.  Decoupage the top of tree cutout to top front of box, and bottom of tree cutout to bottom front of box so that the tree design appears to be one cohesive cutout.

5. Place your monogram transfer side down and rub with a Popsicle stick. Make sure the entire thing changes color or else you won’t get a complete transfer.

6. Turn the box over and use E6000 to attach 4 large wood beads to be the feet of the box. Allow to dry.
