Football Party Today.....Go Niners!

Yep - it is true.....some crafty girls like sports (especially playoffs)!  Today we are having a small viewing party for the big 49er game.  Hubby is from San Fransisco and he is a diehard fan so today is going to be nutz!   He has stuck with the team through thick and thin.  Hubby even played football in  Kezar Stadium...the photographic proof hangs on a wall in our house.

I gotta get my red and gold on and get the chili served up.

Here is the Menu:

(with toppings: chopped onion, shredded cheese, lime, sour cream and Frito chips)

Vietnamese Lemongrass Beef Skewers
Roasted Garlic and Crackers

Have a wonderful Sunday and GO NINERS!

Don't be lost....be found.

Are you missing someone who chooses to be lost?
Has someone you cherish...chosen to be gone?
Are you tired of searching and not willing to give up yet?

 {{I hear you....we hear you}}

This time of the year can be incredibly hard.  Eddie and I have a missing loved one and it hurts.

It sucks.

We will continue our quest.

Mom is coming for the holidays.

Things are about to get NUTTY in the Filian House!

We are just an hour away from picking up my Mom and Step-dad at LAX.  They are spending a week with us for Christmas!  WOO HOO!  This will be Bill's first time to see our new house other than in pictures.

I expect lots of eating, drinking, cooking, laughing, crafting, sightseeing and goofing off.

Merry Christmas.....XO cathie

P.S. Mom is bringing with her a stack of my late Grandmother's recipes with her hand written notes. Mom and I are going to be making her Cinnamon rolls (this was actually my great-great grandmother's recipe), biscuits and a cake that was marked "for special occasions".  I'll be blogging the all of them so you can make them too.

Celebrating Small Successes

Today we are hosting a small gathering to celebrate the completion of a pilot we just did with a team of really talented people.  We still have to sell the show so we are not popping the corks yet!

As I was prepping the food and drinks, I was reminding myself....that celebrating small successes and baby-steps is a key element in big picture thinking.

Last year, I was honored to host an etsy lab where I shared my story, tips and thoughts on being an entrepreneur and handcraft designer.  I spoke about big picture thinking.  The basic idea......is to dream the biggest dream and then chart the baby-steps and contacts needed to reach the BIG PICTURE IDEA.  Reaching the small goals is important for reaching the big picture idea.  But.....celebrating the small successes (baby-steps) along the way is MOST important for your spirit.

Life is short and you should celebrate all the baby-steps.  Pat yourself, your partner or team on the back.  Enjoy the process of reaching a goal and treat yourself good.

Attending The Casey Anthony Trial

Jose Baez, Casey Anthony - Day 2 of Trial
(RED HUBER, ORLANDO SENTINEL / May 25, 2011)

Taking a departure from crafts today...
giving you a peek at the crime fighting Cathie.

I have been following crimes and trials for a very long time.  It was my friend Laura, who first introduced me to the idea that one could follow or learn about criminal cases.  We were in college and she had the book The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule, it was the chilling story of Ted Bundy.  I was hooked.

Of course the next biggie was OJ and then came Scott Peterson.  I followed the Peterson story from the first day they broke into our news with the report of a missing Laci.  Steve and I were at the thrift store prepping season one of Creative Juice when my husband called to say the jury had reached a verdict in the Peterson trial. We raced back home, grabbed paper bags (in case I hyperventilated) and plopped in front of the TV to watch Beth Karas deliver the news that Scott was guilty.

Other cases I have followed are Natalee Holloway/ Joran Van der Slout, Amanda Knox and Susan Powell.  Thankfully the internet has many great resources for following.  Forums like Scared Monkeys, InSession and Websleuths offer chat, photos, links and theory swaps with other armchair detectives.

My heart melted, when the first news of a missing Caylee Anthony broke.  Her big brown eyes and sweet song to her great-grandpa were enough to draw me in.  Then I learned about her mother.....How could a mother not report her daughter missing while she partied and carried on for 31 days?  I was in disbelief and again, totally hooked on seeing this story to the end.  I have read all the depositions, watch every "bombshell" on Nancy Grace and have even visited the key locations in the case.

When I got the news that I would be doing an appearance at HSN right around the date the Anthony trial was set to begin my brain started to race.  By my calculations, I would be 85 miles away from the courthouse and my mom would be less than an hour away.  I called mom and asked her if she wanted to meet me and try to attend the trial.  It was an instant yes and my plan went into motion.

Here is my journey to Florida.

After flying from Los Angeles, I finally landed at 7:00pm in Tampa. The drive from the Tampa airport to St. Petersburg is very pretty, the sun setting on the water was beautiful.  I am thinking...How am I ever going to get up at 3:00am to get to HSN at 4:00am for my 7:00am show....I am on west coast time.  UGH.

 Late-night halls of HSN.

I made it HSN - got my tables prepped, went into hair and make-up and waited to go live.

I am up next!  I am not even thinking about my drive to Orlando yet. Focusing only on my tween silk-screen kits, the presentation and how hungry I am.

The show was a success!  I wrapped up the supplies and hightailed it to my hotel.
OPENING STATEMENTS were happening in less than 1 hour!!!!!!

I ordered up breakfast, had my monkeys on my ipad and the TV set to watch the opening arguments.

I was on pins and needles waiting for Linda Drane Burdick to begin her opening statements.  She did such a wonderful job.  While attending the trial, I got to quickly speak with her.  I congratulated her on a job well done.  She smiled sweetly and said "Thank You" - then her smile grew bigger.  I was so excited to share an exchange with her.   She is such a smart firecracker.

Woo Hoo!!  It was time to head up to Orlando and for my adventure to really begin!  I did not want to miss a moment so I streamed the audio on my ipad.  For safety sake, I decided not to play the video...lol.  Keep my eyes on the road!!!

I arrived!  First stop.... find the courthouse.

Day 1 - Casey Anthony Trial
Exterior Courthouse

The front courtyard of the courthouse.  The protester boxes had been removed.
Will they need them on verdict day?

Beautiful Building.
Orange County Courthouse
425 N. Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32801

Mom and me in front of the courthouse.

Media Camps.

Security....everywhere.

Time for bed.
We have to get up at 4:15 am to get in line.

Day 2 - Casey Anthony Trial
Exterior Courthouse

 6:00 am - Day 2 - Anthony Trial

We arrived at the courthouse at 5:00 am and we promptly got in line.  We were near the beginning so I was now positive we were going to get in.  I was feeling a little guilty for pressing my mom so hard about getting ready quickly...lol.  I texted my hubby and family to let them know the news and updated my twitter / facebook.  I met some nice people in line.  Magpie from The Hinky Meter was the first person we met.  We also met a nice lady from Florida who has a Vacation Home Business.  We met a group of ladies (flgirl & xmygrits) from the insession boards who all met up to attend the trial.  The line also included a small group of law students who sat on the ground studying for an exam.  One woman had been in line since 11:45 pm...wow!  One gentleman was a little off and security had to tell him he was not going to be able to attend.  He took the news in stride and we never saw him again.

The sun is coming up!  The time is near.

A court official passed out rules documents to each person in line.  It was really sobering to be holding an official document in a case that I had been following for so long.  I was smitten seeing Judge Perry's signature.  I must admit to a bit of a crush on him.

Love me some Judge Belvin Perry.

This is what a ticket looks like.  I was seat 15 and mom was seat 16.  As it turns out we were in prime seats for being televised.  While we were in court my emails and facebook were going nuts with folks emailing me and asking if I was at the Casey Anthony trial.  I guess the red hair is a giveaway.

You can see our assigned seats here.  This is a picture my hubby took of the TV while the trial was live.  This was after lunch.  Some folks did not return.  After a little while the seats began to fill back up.

While we were waiting to go in I did a few interviews.  You can see one here.

Media is waiting for council, George Anthony and Cindy Anthony to arrive.

Jeff Ashton arrives.

George and Cindy Anthony arrive and the media goes crazy.  I really can't imagine being in their shoes for one moment.  Life as they knew it is over.  At the end of the day it got really hairy when a young man got in their face.  Security quickly ushered him away.  I felt really bad for them - it was scary.

During the past three years, I have not been a fan of the Anthony family and often felt that "Save Casey" became their focus instead of "Justice for Caylee."  As the trial gets under way, I see their shift to the state and for that I will take a second evaluation at my opinions.

I was furious with Baez's opening statements and personally feel like it was criminal of him to throw everyone under the bus.  At this point in time, I don't believe anything he said about a drowning, George or Roy Kronk.  It was just more lies lies lies from the Casey Camp.

I was really glad George Anthony was "Team Caylee" when he took the stand on Day 1.  Holding out hope for the rest of the family.  One thing to note is the during court, Casey never looked at her parents and I really did not see them trying to look at her.  Also, they are positioned away from direct view of the jury.  During court, Cindy and I made eye contact and exchanged a small acknowledgement of each other.

Inside the courthouse.

The ceiling.

The view from the 23rd floor where the court room is located.

I spotted lots of Crime reporters, authors,
producers and legal analysts!

(I sat by him and heard all his commentary)

(Insession correspondent)

(She was the first crime reporter I listened to on radio.
KFI Los Angeles she covered the Peterson Trial)

(Had a quick chat in the ladies room with her)

(My hero - I sat by her and complemented her on her coral dress)

COURT IS NOW IN SESSION

This was almost my view of Inmate Casey Anthony.   I had direct eyeline with her the entire day.  She rarely looked around.  I saw her look and watch Tony Lazaro.  She looked at all of her friends.  She never looks to the media or public.  Her stature is very small.  She has lost a ton of weight since she was first incarcerated.  Her eyes appear sunken and her skin is ashen.  She knows how to play the game.  Serious and focused when the jury is in the court room, light and smiling when they are not in the room.  She behaves as if she is lead council.  Shuffling papers, making notes, summonsing her other attorneys with with a crocked finger motion.

It was really really really unbelievable.  She is one specimen.

This pretty much sums up what Casey and Baez look like when the jury is not in the room.

Inside the courtroom.  From my view, I could see Jeff Ashton's computer with the evidence photos before they were published to the jury.  It was interesting to see where they were going a little bit ahead of the time.

For me, seeing Anthony (Tony) Lazaro testify was pretty amazing.  He was directly involved with Casey during the 31 days.  It was heartbreaking to hear his story.  He, like so many other people who knew Casey, was hit with the news of a missing Caylee like a Mack truck.  He was completely in shock.  He only looked at Casey when the prosecution made him identify her.  She was very upset when they made her stand.  I must admit I had a secret smile on my face.  When he walked out of the courtroom, he walked with purpose.  I think he did good.

What is in the bag?  I guess we will have to wait and see.

Caylee Marie Anthony
August 9, 2005 - June 16, 2008

At the end of the day, mom and I were exhausted. It was very interesting and I am glad I made the journey.  If you made it all the way to the end of this epic post, you might be wondering about the Jury.  I opted not to write about the jury to protect them and the entire process. Instead, I will just look into this beautiful child's eyes and say a silent word that justice is coming.  Rest in Peace little Caylee.

Day 1 Begins Tomorrow

It is a good thing I dusted off my green boots last week.......   Steve and I have a thousand hurdles to jump and about 10 doors to kick down and now I am ready!

Tomorrow begins the first day of a project we have been dreaming about, working on and daring ourselves to do.  This has been 5 years in the works and we have stood by this idea through thick and thin.  It will still be "very" beginning stages - so it will be like starting all over again and I am soooo fine with that - just ready to begin.  I wish I could share more!  soon soon.  I can tell you that glitter, glue and stitches are involved.

The work is about to begin and I am so excited that I just needed to get it pen to paper.....or in this case, keyboard to blog.

Just Hours From This Time Last Year....

(my father-in-law)

I miss him so bad.  Words or tears will never explain or show the loss I feel. As I stumble to regain a sense of what was, I know he is watching and laughing from above.  xo

Waving Hi and Catching my Breath.

Hello Friend,

Please excuse my blogging absence... things have been a little nutty.  The ups and downs of life really have me on a rollercoaster lately.  I guess the good part is that the extreme pull my hair out, crying as I walked through the Glendale Galleria bad stuff is SO over shadowed by all the wonderful (OMG this is real) good stuff.

BOO HOO

Last week my hard drive bit the dust - gone - good bye - I LOST IT ALL and in the process, I managed to go into complete shock at the Mac store.  It was like a giant wave of docs, budgets, pictures and invoices flashed before my eyes.  Unfortunately, I had not backed-up since before CHA...so lots was lost.  As the giant wave began to settle, the tears began to fall from my eyes.  I was like a splotchy faucet walking through the mall.  When I got home, I managed to remain calm and still to this day, as I type on my new/old computer, I feel somewhat Ok with the whole crash and burn.  I guess I've resolved to the fact that it is time to say good-bye to somethings in order to say hello to new.

 Enough of the pity party.....
Let's Celebrate.

{{{{{SO HAPPY FOR}}}}}

My hubby made me a handmade frame for Valentine's Day.

I got a sneak peek at the cover of my next book and I love it!

My dog (max) got groomed and  he looks cute!

The last of my new colors of glitter have arrived and are ready for pictures.

I managed to thoroughly clean my bedroom and I reorganized the china hutch.

Back Home from my Vacation!

Vacation. I know it is easy to say....but for a "working girl" it is hard to do. It was wonderful! I got to laugh, swim and relax with my family on a cruise in the Bahamas. so fun - so tired.

I just got back to a pile of paperwork, projects to do, a messy house and meetings.

See my Bahamas pics here.

Look What my Hubby Made!

The past few months, I have been working fast and furiously to design, create and write all the projects for my next book, 101 Tees. It is actually 172 different designs. Yesterday all the projects shipped to Lark Books where they will be turned into a book. To celebrate my hubby baked me his very first cake. He even hand mixed his own color of light purple icing for the lettering and he used a pipping bag and decorating tip. I am only lucky girl.

Moving Forward

It is one week since my dear father-in-law passed away and I am left feeling numb and overwhelmed. The wake/prayer service was overwhelming with all the love and support from family and friends. The funeral and interment was everything a family could hope for and truly honored Hrant. At the lunch, the toasts and food were plentiful. Our eyes have dried of tears as our hearts begin to heal.

And now - we are picking up the pieces where our lives stopped as Hrant's did.

Last night, I picked up my notebook in an attempt to try to regain some sense of normalcy and figure out what to do next. As I flipped back the 10 pages of funeral planning notes, I realized that I must turn back in order to move forward.

Turning Back the Pages to go Forward

Notes left unfinished.
Ideas holding still.

Will I remember where I left off?

Projects in half progress.
Projects to be sweetened and completed.
Projects Hrant will only see from the sky.

As I move forward,
I will move forward with force and gusty wind.

I will pick up where I left off
with fresh vision and fresh creativity.

I will begin.

Mr. Filian - you will be missed.

Hrant Ruben Filian
December 17, 1922
March 4, 2010

If I were to tell you the widest and most heroic tales and stories about life, love and the pursuit of the American dream, then I would be telling you stories about Hrant Filian - my father-in-law.

I am saddened that he passed away this morning but grateful that he did not suffer and that he was only sick for a very short time. He lived life to the fullest even when life looked bleak for him.

He was born in Beruit and grew up with 3 siblings. He was full of spirit and spunk. He loved a good shot of vodka and always toasted everyone at the table. The toasts were not just at the beginning of a meal....they lasted the whole meal. He was very good looking and a bit of a flirt.

He spoke 5 languages and was still taking English class up until his visit to the hospital 23 days ago. He always had more to learn.

He was a fighter pilot for the French and he saw so many things during his tour of duty. He would tell tales about the Congo, the pretty ladies that doctored his feet (they were burned by the hot sand in the dessert) and of course the plane crash. They crashed hard and all survived.

His life took a turn for the worse under Stalin. Hrant was held as a prisoner of war for 7 years in Siberia. He held true and held strong to survive. He had limited knowledge of sewing when he was captured and he turned that limited knowledge into life. He began sewing dresses for the officers wives. He would "knock-off" their dresses and make new patterns. The women began sneaking him breads and meats in between the layers of the fabrics. Of course he shared his food treasures to help others survive too. After 7 years of survival - a man walked into the room and said "Hrant Filian - we made a mistake and you are free to go!"

Soon after, he fell in love with Shelley - a Russian beauty. Quite scandalous at the time. They married in Georgia. In 1964 they welcomed their first son, Ruben into the world.

Hrant and his young family had their sights on America and in 1969 they came to California with $300. Each member of the family was allowed to take $100 and 1 gold piece of jewelry. After their arrival in California, Shelley learned that she was pregnant. (with my hubby - Eddie)

Hrant purchased a sewing machine and began hemming pants for local dry cleaners. He kept hemming and hemming and hemming until he had enough money saved to open his own tailor shop. He was a smashing success - designing and creating mens suits. He opened 3 clothing stores in San Francisco. He made suits for all the local sports teams, stayed current with fashion trends and employed many many people.

When he retired, Shelley and Hrant moved to Los Angeles. He was very active in the senior citizen center, a frequenter of the Americana, a beach goer and an awesome pop!

I will miss him dearly.

Hrant and his true love.

Eddie and his dad.

At the Americana - his favorite place for coffee and people watching.

Hrant and Ruben (his oldest son)

Just 2 months ago at his friends 90th birthday party.

In Malibu overlooking the water.

Another day in Malibu - this day we saw dolphins.

A friend to everyone!

Another spot he loved - Venice Beach. How much do you love that he even wears a suit to the beach?

A final Toast!
